European Union (EU)
The chief objective of the EU’s vision of development is to reduce poverty worldwide in the context of sustainable development and to meet the Millennium Development Goals, to which all the UN member states subscribe, by 2015.
AMREF and the EU in partnership
AMREF currently supports five European Union funded projects in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and South Sudan. These projects address health issues affecting the most marginalised and vulnerable communities. Specifically this includes women of reproductive age and children under the age of five, in remote and isolated regions.
PROJECT IN FOCUS: Maternal, newborn and child health project - Kenya, Tanzania and Southern Sudan
This is an ambitious four year project and is the largest grant AMREF have secured from the EU to date.
Working across three countries, this project is helping to improve maternal, newborn and child health in the hard-to-reach areas of: Lamu district in Kenya; Mtwara and Tandahimba districts in Tanzania and Tali and Tindoro payams and Terekera County in Southern Sudan.
The project seeks to develop innovative methods to bring health care closer to these communities, adapting to their unique needs, environments and lifestyles.
The emphasis is on empowering communities, especially women and girls with the knowledge to demand and access health services such as family planning, antenatal and postnatal support and the management of childhood illnesses.
The project also supports the local health systems to deliver inclusive, comprehensive services by training community health workers and improving the knowledge of nurses, midwives and clinical officers. It also includes developing community health information systems and mobilising the community to change their behaviours towards health.
