World AIDS Day 2010
Supporting the most vulnerable communities in Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa is home to more than two thirds (68%) of the global population living with HIV (22.5 million) but only a little over 10% of its population has access to anti-retroviral drugs.
Women suffer disproportionately from HIV. Young women aged 15-24 years are as much as eight times more likely than men to be HIV-positive.
AMREF has a long history of working to prevent HIV and ensuring people living with HIV have access to good quality health care.
We also work to fight the stigma and discrimination many people living with HIV in Africa face from within their communities.
AMREF works with local communities to help prevent new infections of HIV and to minimise its impact on people already infected. Key to prevention and treatment is people’s ‘status awareness’. We encourage voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) for those who think they might be at risk.
