About us
AMREF (the African Medical and Research Foundation) is Africa’s leading health charity.
AMREF started life in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa and have over 55 years experience working with the most marginalised and vulnerable communities across sub-Saharan Africa to create lasting health change.
Beginning with aeroplanes, to provide the most remote communities with health care, we have always used the ‘tools of our time’ to bridge the gap between heath systems and people.
Today we use e-learning, telemedicine, and mobile phones to spread health knowledge and care. Our work has won high-profile international awards such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Award for Global Health and the Conrad Hilton Humanitarian Award.
In 2011, AMREF brought better health to 12 million people across Africa.
AMREF’s African Heroes. It’s people, not organisations who create lasting change. Our latest Annual Review focuses on the real life African Heroes, healthworkers at all levels.
In 1956, three doctors, Michael Wood, Archibald McIndoe and Tom Rees, drew up a groundbreaking plan to provide medical assistance to remote regions of East Africa.
The AMREF office in the UK focuses on increasing the impact of AMREF's work in Africa by generating funds to support AMREF's strategic health priorities.
AMREF UK is governed by a Board of Trustees. The Board meets regularly to discuss governance matters, including the charity’s vision, mission and strategic direction.
In the UK our purpose is to increase the impact of AMREF in Africa – raising funds and targeting resources towards programmes that strengthen health systems for the long-term.
If you are passionate about working for an African-led organisation which supports sustainable health change, then AMREF UK could be for you.
We are currently recruiting for a Programme Assistant.
